Goal

This is the first time our family is visiting Hawaii. In less than a month, my goal is to plan a budget- and vegetarian-friendly 7-day long trip to Oahu, Hawaii. Work in progress.

  • 6 nights, 7 days
  • Recommended to stay on Waikiki Beach
    • Average between $175 - 300+ per night. Mostly apartments.

Weather

  • The average weather in March in Oahu is high 78 degrees F and low 64 degrees F, with rain 5 days of the month.
  • There are 12 hours of daylight.
  • The average humidity is around 70%
  • The average sunset time in March in Oahu is 6:30 PM

Mobility

Traffic

  • Real-time Oahu traffic monitoring: GoAkamai

TheBus

“TheBus is Oahu’s public bus system. You can catch a ride for 2, and works similarly to an Oyster Card. To use the HOLO card, you just need to add money to it, and then tap into the bus. After paying for two rides, you’ll then be eligible for a day pass and the rest of your trips will be free for the day.”

Fare TypePriceDetails
Single Fare$3.00Includes 2.5 hours unlimited transfers
Day Cap$7.50No additional payments after this amount is reached in a day
3-Day Pass$20.00Valid 72 hours from first use
7-Day Pass$35.00Valid 168 hours from first use

(from TheBus transit pass website)

For our trip, getting a Holo Card + 4x 7-day passes seems to be the most economical.

Waikiki Trolley

“There is also a hop-on hop-off trolley in Waikiki . At the time of writing, you can get a 1-day pass for 65, or a 7-day pass for $75. The trolley has over 40 stops including Diamond Head , Sea Life Park, and Chinatown . “

To/From Airport

  • Robertson’s shuttle roundtrip $50 to/from airport

  • Public bus system

  • It’s worth it to get a rental car if you want to do a lot of activities in the North Shore.

  • Discount Hawaii Car Rental is recommended. No prepay necessary + best rates.

  • 7 days is probably $1000 for all rental car costs included
